Blessing of Throats:
February 8 and 9
Celebrating the Memorial of St. Blaise,
Bishop and Martyr, the blessing of throats
will be given at the end of all Masses the weekend of February 2/3. The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Blaise, on February 3. St. Blaise was a physician and later a bishop in late 3rd century/early 4th century Armenia (in modern-day Turkey). St. Blaise is said to have miraculously cured a little boy who nearly died because he was choking on a fishbone. From that miracle came the tradition of the blessing of throats on the Memorial of St. Blaise: a priest, deacon orclay person touches two blessed candles in the form of a cross to the throat of each person while saying the following: “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

La Bendición de las gargantas de San Blas se dará al final de todas las Misas del fin de semana 2 y 3 de Febrero. El día 3 de
Febrero la Iglesia celebra la Fiesta de San Blas, Obispo y Mártir. El era un doctor quién, a finales del siglo III y a principios del IV, fue Obispo en Armenia (lo que se conoce ahora como Turquía). Se dice que San Blas curó milagrosamente a un pequeño que estuvo a punto de morir cuando se ahogaba con un hueso de pescado. A partir de ese milagro, inició la tradición de la bendición de las gargantas el Día de San Blas, donde el sacerdote, diácono o un laico coloca dos velas en forma de cruz en la garganta de cada persona mientras dice las palabras: "Por la intercesión de San Blas, Obispo y Mártir, que Dios te libre de cualquier enfermedad en la garganta y de cualquier otra enfermedad, en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo."
