Mysterium Encounter: Theological Implications of Secret Societies

Registration is now open for the third symposium in our Mysterium Encounter series!

Join Fr. Hugh Barbour, O.Praem, Fr. Diego Menniti, and Mr. Wesley Saban as they uncover the Theological Implications behind some of the most common and mysterious Secret Societies at our third Mysterium Encounter , held on Thursday, March 19th!

The event will begin at 6:00pm. Registration will be $30, and will include dinner, dessert, cocktails, and more! Young adults can register for $15 using the discount code OLGYA

SPEAKERS

Fr. Hugh Barbour, O.Praem

Fr. Hugh Barbour, O.Praem., is a Norbertine of St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado, California. He grew up in South Pasadena and is a convert from the Episcopal Church. After earning a bachelor’s degree in classics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Fr. Hugh entered St. Michael’s in 1982 and was ordained a priest in 1990. He earned a license in patristic theology at the Augustinianum and a doctorate in philosophy at the Angelicum in Rome. He has taught philosophy at St. Michael’s to the Abbey’s junior professed seminarians studying for the priesthood since 1992 and was prior of the abbey from 1995 until 2017. Fr. Hugh has been active over the years in weekend parish ministry and in giving talks and retreats; he has served as chaplain of the St. Thomas More Society of Orange County and as censor deputatus of the Diocese of Orange, and he is a knight commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

Fr. Diego Menniti, D. Be, S. Th. L.

Fr. Diego Menniti, a priest of the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace (Calabria, Italy), was ordained on June 27, 2015. He pursued his philosophical and theological studies in Calabria before earning a Licentiate in Social Moral Theology with a specialization in Bioethics (S.Th.L.) in 2016.

Recognized for his leadership, he was appointed by the Regional Catholic Bishops Conference to oversee the Preparatory Year at the Pontifical Regional Seminary “S. Pio X” of Catanzaro during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Fr. Menniti deepened his expertise in bioethics internationally, earning a Master of Arts in Bioethics from Loyola Marymount University (Los Angeles, California) in 2020, followed by a Doctorate in Bioethics (D. Be) from Loyola University Chicago in 2023. His doctoral research integrates theology, bioethics, and contemporary ethical challenges, solidifying his authority in the field.

Since April 2024, he has been serving at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mission Viejo, in the Diocese of Orange, California.

Mr. Wesley Saban, B. Ba

Wesley Saban resides in Irvine, California. He was born and raised Mormon, serving as a Mormon missionary in Brisbane, Australia in 2017. In 2021, influenced by the writings of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas, he left Mormonism to pursue Trinitarian Christianity. Wesley was baptized Catholic at St. Michael’s Abbey in 2023. Since then, he has assisted many of his friends in receiving their sacraments, and retains a fire for evangelization through the intercession of our Holy Mother.

A Rorate Caeli Mass is a mass celebrated during Advent in devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Mass, celebrated at sunrise and lit only by candles, reminds us of the darkness of the world, and through the rising sun lighting up the church, we are reminded of the Light of Christ in the Nativity. As a votive Mass celebrated for the Blessed Virgin Mary, white vestments are worn instead of the traditional purple vestments worn during Advent. The Mass readings highlight prophecies of Christ's Incarnation in the Nativity.

This year, we will be celebrating two Rorate Caeli Masses in Spanish. They will take place at 5am on December 6th and December 20th.

La Misa Rorate Caeli se celebra durante el Adviento en devoción a la Santísima Virgen María.

La Misa, celebrada al amanecer e iluminada únicamente por velas, nos recuerda la oscuridad del mundo y, a través del sol naciente que ilumina la iglesia, recordamos la Luz de Cristo en la Natividad. Al ser una Misa votiva celebrada en honor a la Santísima Virgen María, se visten vestiduras blancas en lugar de las tradicionales vestiduras moradas que se usan durante el Adviento. Las lecturas de la Misa resaltan las profecías de la Encarnación de Cristo en la Natividad.

Este año celebraremos dos Misas Rorate Caeli en español. Se llevarán a cabo a las 5:00 a. m. los días 6 y 20 de diciembre.

Michael Patrick Barber is Professor of Sacred Scripture and Theology. He is the author of numerous scholarly articles and publications, including, The Historical Jesus and the Temple: Memory, Methodology, and the Gospel of Matthew (Cambridge University Press, 2023; with a Foreword from Dale C. Allison, Jr.) and Paul, A New Covenant Jew: Rethinking Pauline Theology (Eerdmans, 2019), co-written with Brant Pitre and John Kincaid (with a Foreword from Michael J. Gorman).

He is an active member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Catholic Biblical Association. In addition to his teaching and academic research, Dr. Barber has written public-facing works, most recently, The True Meaning of Christmas: The Birth of Jesus and the Origins of the Season (Augustine Institute Press, 2021; Foreword by John Cavadini). Theological Implications of Extraterrestrial Life: A Symposium

Join us August 30th from 5:00pm to 9:00pm for our first of three symposiums in our Mysterium Encounter !

A ticket for the first installment is $25 and is free for clergy and religious. The event will include dinner, themed cocktails, talks given by three panelists, as well as a tinfoil hat competition!

Our speakers include:

Keynote Speaker, Dr. Paul Thigpen, PHD
Paul Thigpen, PhD, is an internationally known speaker, award-winning journalist, and best-selling author of sixty books, including the Manual for Spiritual Warfare , The Life of Saint Joseph as Seen by the Mystics , and Extraterrestrial Intelligence and the Catholic Faith: Are We Alone in the Universe With God and the Angels? In addition, he has published more than five hundred journal and magazine articles in more than forty religious and secular periodicals. His work has been circulated worldwide and translated into sixteen languages. Paul graduated summa cum laude from Yale with a BA in Religious Studies. Awarded the Woodruff, Javitz, and Salvatori Fellowships for graduate study, he earned an MA and PhD in historical theology from Emory University. He was appointed to a term on the National Advisory Council of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and has served the Church as a theologian, historian, apologist, evangelist, catechist, and musician.

Thomist, Scientific Respondent: Fr. Thomas Davenport, OP, PhD

Fr. Thomas Davenport, O.P. is an American Dominican, physicist, and philosopher. Before joining the Dominican Order, he studied physics at the California Institute of Technology before going on to earn his doctorate in physics from Stanford University studying theoretical particle physics. The focus of his scientific research was writing and testing simulations for high energy particle colliders like the LHC at CERN. After joining the Dominicans in 2010, he studied philosophy and theology in preparation for his ordination to the priesthood in 2017. In addition, he earned a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America, focusing on the philosophy of science and natural philosophy. In 2020 he joined the faculty of philosophy at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome, where he teaches philosophy of nature and epistemology – while working on his second PhD – this time in philosophy. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to the intersection of faith and science and a contributor to a number of projects in this area including, the Thomistic Evolution project, the Aquinas 101 – Faith and Science series, and the annual Thomistic Philosophy and Natural Science Symposium hosted by the Thomistic Institute in Washington, DC. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Catholic Scientists.

Eastern Christian respondent: Dr. Tikhon A. Pino, PhD

A Cuban-American born and raised in northern New Jersey, Dr Pino holds a BA in Greek and Latin (Classics) from the Catholic University of America (2005), an MTS from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (2013), and a PhD from Marquette University (2021). He is the author of Essence and Energies: Being and Naming God in St. Gregory Palamas, published by Routledge in 2022, and translator of Against All Heresies by St Symeon of Thessalonica. He has published widely on the Greek theological tradition, including articles on hylomorphic theory in Aristotle and Plotinus, the doctrine of God in Philo of Alexandria, the Trinitarian theology of Basil of Ancyra and St Maximos the Confessor, and the anthropology of St Mark of Ephesos and Thomas Aquinas. He is especially interested in the intersection of metaphysics and mysticism in the Greek patristic tradition as well as the interaction between Byzantine and Scholastic Theology. An instructor of Liturgical Greek and other courses at Holy Cross, Dr Pino's work has appeared in the Journal of Theological Studies, the Journal of Early Christian Studies, the Heythrop Journal, Analogia, Franciscan Studies, Dionysius, Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica (De Gruyter), and the Greek Orthodox Theological Review. He served as Assistant Director of the Pappas Patristic Institute since 2021 and was appointed Director in 2024.

El Cuerpo, la Sangre, el Alma y la Divinidad de nuestro Señor están verdaderamente presentes en la Eucaristía. Las humildes formas del pan y el vino asumen la presencia más magnífica de Cristo mismo durante la Misa, y nosotros, los fieles, agradecemos participar en el sacrificio en el altar. Si bien la fiesta se celebra en Estados Unidos el domingo, tradicionalmente se celebra el jueves después del Domingo de la Trinidad, en memoria del Jueves Santo, el día en que Cristo, en la Última Cena, instituyó el Sacramento de la Eucaristía. Por lo tanto, para participar en esa conmemoración, tendremos una procesión después de la Misa en español el jueves 19 de junio.

Join us in celebration of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. The Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord are truly present in the Eucharist. The humble forms of bread and wine take on the most magnificent presence of Christ himself during the Mass, and we the faithful are thankful to participate in the sacrifice on the altar. While the feast itself is celebrated in the US on Sunday, it is traditionally celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, in remembrance of Maundy Thursday - the day on which Christ, at the Last Supper, instituted the Sacrament of the Eucharist. So, in order to participate in that remembrance, we will be having a procession after the Spanish Mass on Thursday, June 19th.

We are in need of men and women of God who love their faith and want to share it with others. It is a wonderful blessing and opportunity to participate actively in the development of Catholic youth! We are in search of catechists to help lead sessions for Sacramental Preparations! We need catechists for adults and for children and teens, and their parents! It may seem like a daunting and weighty task, but I assure you, it is all the more an immense gift to work with our wonderful students.

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church,

With great gratitude to Almighty God, and to His Excellency, the Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann, JCD, DD, DMin, Bishop of Orange, I am happy to announce that Bishop Vann has seen fit to assign me as Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, effective July 1st, 2025 , and that announcement is now public as of Friday, April 11th. I am also delighted that my friend and colleague, Fr. Gastón Mendiola-Arroyo, will remain here next year as Parochial Vicar.

Now that this news is public, we will begin to plan for the formal Mass of “Installation”, at which Bishop Vann or his delegate will formally “install” me as Pastor sometime after July 1st. However, even before that “Installation” Mass takes place, my assignment as Pastor will begin on July 1st.

It has been a tremendous honor, joy, and privilege to serve here as Parochial Administrator for the past two years, and I look forward to remaining with you as your Pastor. I can truly say without any equivocation that I love this community and its people, and I am profoundly grateful that I will get to remain here as your shepherd, your brother, and hopefully, your friend. You consistently edify and inspire me to be a better person, and I promise you that I will do everything in my power to serve you and the parish of La Habra with my whole heart in the name of God and of our common Shepherd and Bishop, the Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann.

Therefore, with the grace and help of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the intercession of our patroness, la Guadalupana , the Most Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, together let’s become saints!

Este anuncio se ha hecho público el viernes, 11 de abril. También me complace anunciar que mi amigo y colega, el P. Gastón Mendiola-Arroyo, permanezca aquí el próximo año como Vicario Parroquial.

Ahora que esta noticia es pública, comenzaremos a planificar la Misa de Investidura, en la que el Obispo Vann o su delegado me instalará formalmente como Párroco después del 1 de julio. Sin embargo, incluso antes de que se celebre dicha Misa, mi nombramiento como Párroco comenzará el 1 de julio.

“Pastor” vs.

“Parochial Administrator”?

In the Diocese of Orange, as in many (arch)dioceses in the US and abroad, when a priest is first promoted from being an assistant priest in a parish (“Parochial Vicar”) to being the lead “Pastor”, he is assigned a 2-year interim appointment. In this intermediate step, the newly promoted head parish priest is referred to as “Parochial Administrator”.

In this position, the “Parochial Administrator” has all the responsibilities and obligations of a “Pastor”, as well as the rights of a “Pastor” to administer the parish’s temporal and spiritual goods in the name of the local bishop and on his behalf. However, in this intermediate step, by being referred to as “Parochial Administrator” instead of “Pastor”, the priest lacks the “stability” that the Canon Law of the Church affords to “Pastors”. Prior to having “stability”, if the local bishop would like to move a “Parochial Administrator” from one parish to another, it is very easy for the bishop to do so, as the position of “Parochial Administrator” is meant to be an interim assignment without any necessary endurance (Parochial Vicars, or assistant priests, also lack “stability” and can be moved at will). In the Diocese of Orange, and in many other (arch)dioceses, this temporary step is meant to ensure that the priest appointed is successful in his role, before the bishop grants him “stability”. Once a man is named “Pastor” (in Latin, parochus , aka “Parish Priest”), however, he acquires “stability” in his position according to the Canon Law of the Church, and his position is “stable” either indefinitely, or with term limits (barring some major issue). In the Diocese of Orange at present, “Pastors” serve for 6-year terms, renewable once (during Msgr. MacCarthy’s tenure, term limits did not exist yet in the Diocese of Orange, which is why he served for almost his whole career here). As such, now in the Diocese of Orange a “Pastor” can serve for a minimum of 6 years in a given parish, or a maximum of 12 years (if he was “Parochial Administrator” at that same parish first, however, his first 2 years as Administrator do not count towards his first 6-year term as “Pastor”, and thus an Administrator who becomes a Pastor could potentially serve for 8 years at minimum, or 14 years at maximum, in any given parish).

A mobile Food truck selling coffee, paninis & More!

Coming to Our Lady of Guadalupe beginning May 31st

Guadalupe’s Roasts & Toasts will be an apostolate of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for the purposes of evangelization and outreach through community-building.

To begin, Guadalupe’s will be in service at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for limited hours on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings. We will set out some additional seating on Jason’s Plaza while Guadalupe’s is open for parishioners to enjoy their coffee and paninis together! We are greatly looking forward to providing a casual space for our parishioners to gather as we celebrate the Lord’s Day together.

VOLUNTEER

Here’s where you come in: We are looking for volunteers to help us run Guadalupe’s. We’ve come to find that community flourishes when serving together. Those who volunteer to work at Guadalupe’s will have a particular opportunity to grow in relationship with one another.

Our mobile truck is also equipped with a commercial-grade panini press. As such, we will be hosting a training for all who are interested in volunteering on a date in the near future (more information to come). The training will be in English. Statement Regarding 'Last Supper' Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Historically, the Olympics have been a time for all people to be united in the love of sport. The games provided an opportunity to set aside cultural differences, ideological opinions and view one another simply as fellow human beings. It was a time in which people from all over the world felt included and united.

Sadly, last week in Paris, instead of creating an event that unites and shows mutual respect, the organizers chose to use the opening ceremony to attack Christians. Many of you have seen the blasphemous scene in which the Last Supper was used by drag queens to mock the self-giving sacrifice of Christ — the sign of his love for all people. As if the blasphemy was not enough, the performance also included satanic imagery. The message from the organizers is very clear: Christians do not deserve respect and are not welcome at the Paris Olympics.

We echo the statement of French Bishops when they said that the opening ceremonies “unfortunately included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we deeply deplore.” We ask all Christians and people of good will to pray for the conversion of those involved in this sickening spectacle, to spend additional time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, to boldly proclaim your faith in the Eucharist, and consider boycotting the Olympics this year.

We encourage you to contact the International Olympic Committee by clicking here or visiting https://olympics.com/ioc/contact-us to express your disappointment that they would promote division and blasphemy.

May the organizers of the Olympics realize that rather than mock and blaspheme, humanity is better served when we work for unity, respect and excellence in sport.

We are very excited to welcome Fr. Gastón Mendiola-Arroyo to Our Lady of Guadalupe, La Habra! On July 6-7, we hosted a welcome reception after each Mass for Fr. Gastón with mimosas, margaritas, tacos, elotes, mariachis and more!

Thank you very much to all of the ministries and donors that made this event possible, and to all the members of our community who participated in the celebrations!

Estamos muy emocionados de darle la bienvenida al Padre Gastón a nuestra parroquia.

Tuvimos una recepción después de cada misa el 6 y 7 de julio con mimosas, margaritas, tacos, elotes, mariachis y más.
