Knights of Columbus

About The Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut. It is a Catholic men’s fraternal organization to support parish priests and help widows and orphans of deceased members of the Catholic Church. Since its founding, the Knights of Columbus has become the largest Men’s fraternal organization in the world, It provides well over two million hours of volunteer time to Catholic causes and events.

The purpose and function of The Knights of Columbus is based upon the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. They support our parish priests and the parish community by providing volunteer hours and fundraising to enable parish events and activities such as right-to-life ministries, wheel chairs for the handicapped, camps for the mentally disabled, various youth activities such as free throw and essay contests, and they promote and support vocations to the priesthood. This is done at a local, state and nationwide level.

The Knights of Columbus, Joseph Scott Council, is located here at Our Lady of Guadalupe and has 100 members. They provide support for parish events and ministries including but not limited to La Fiesta, volunteering as Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, and Lectors.

As a group, the Knights of Columbus organizes fundraisers such as pancake breakfasts, Lenten fish dinners, bus trips and other events. The money supports seminarians with their expenses and education scholarships for graduates of Our Lady of Guadalupe School.

On a worldwide level, the Knights of Columbus is funded by income generated by its non-profit insurance program available for all of its members. The Knights of Columbus Insurance Company is a non-profit insurance company, with the highest possible rating, which offers insurance to its members and their families. The opportunity for members to participate in the Knights of Columbus insurance program is not only a benefit for the members, but also helps to fund many of the activities of the Pope throughout the world as well as ministries in the United States.

This ministry welcomes men to enhance their ability to serve the Church, which will allow them to increase their support of seminarians, graduates of Our Lady of Guadalupe School, and our Parish in general.
